The other review here insists on staying away from this. But I think after a few minutes of playing around with it I find that it is an excellent product. On this site and everywhere else on the interwebz I have found that it ONLY shows the front of the device, and I always like to see the rear and sides of the device so I'll be kind and add those later =). It did take several minutes to get working though. When you go to use the menu, it only stays there for a brief few seconds so you have to be quick. But here's a few things to make the learning curve a tad bit more seamless for those of you who decide to purchase this. Don't forget I put this here after you buy it. It may just save you a lot of time.
I'm a little confused what "on" is for this device. It has a VGA in and VGA out on the back, as well as all the other analog inputs that you'd really ever need on the front. The reason why "on" confuses me is because after several minutes, I've found that "on" controls all the front inputs. ***MAKE NOTE OF THIS AS WELL***: There is a red LED. When it is off, that apparently means that it is in fact, on. But when you hit the power button, and the LED comes on, it is in some sort of stand by mode. In this "stand by" mode, that is when the monitor input on the back works. It acts as a switch sort of... I hope that makes sense when you read it. Again, refer to the pictures I'll be putting up.
Another thing to remember is you can adjust the settings only when the LED is off (When it is "on"). Simply hit the menu button. You can adjust the contrast ratio, brightness, input selection (except monitor, because remember, that only works when it is off). I will recommend that you adjust the screen resolution you will be outputting however. For me, I personally had a 1440x900 display, for example.
Since, as you will find if you buy this product, the menu is extremely annoying to navigate, there is an easier way to change between the three input modes (composite, S-video, component). You tap the power button, rather than holding it, to swiftly switch between the three input modes.
I hope the three previous paragraphs really help you if you buy this device. I hope it saves you the time I had to spend when I bought it. Now for the real review: The device is excellent once you get beyond how complicated the setup and learning curve are. I'm currently outputting via my PSP-2000 (the only easily accessible thing I had on me). I'm outputting via component, using the video and audio. the Y, Pb, and Pr connections are connected to the front, along with the RCA audio off to the right of that (Green, Blue, Red, White, Red). The video goes in smoothly, outputted through the VGA out on the rear. No flicker, no visible ghosting, no quality loss that I can see. Golden. (based off of my PSP outputting in 480p, so some blurriness is expected since it was on the PSP to begin with). The audio is being outputted out of a 3.5mm driver in the back to my speakers.
This works great, keeping in mind that it takes some playing around with since the manual it comes with is rubbish. Just read paragraphs 2-4 that I wrote to get you past the complications if you do decide to get this. More specifications on the connections can be found on the pictures I'll eventually upload to Amazon, and I'll provide a little insight through text on that.
The front, of course, supports component, composite, and S video (Composite video [yellow] is inserted into Y-Video and works when you switch to Video mode on the device itself, I have tried this and verified it works. I questioned if composite would work on this but now am here to tell you that it does indeed work through the green connection for component). The back has the power (powered through a normal wall outlet), 3.5mm audio driver output, VGA out, and DIN(?) input. I'm not too sure if it is a DIN input, but it comes with a wire like this: [']
And I've used this for my PC to output through VGA, connect to the gamebox device via what I believe is a DIN connection, and passes through the device (again, when the device is off, and red LED is on), outputting through the VGA out.
I have used the VGA pass-through sort of feature that this offers. It isn't too great to be honest. When I used it, I got a slight flickering on my monitor that really bugged me. So I'll just be unplugging the VGA out on the device, and connecting it straight to my computer when I only want my computer to output to my monitor. Not a big problem, but it would be nice if it didn't flicker. It is possible that since it is analog, that it is interference occurring where I place the wire. So do note this may not be to the fault of the device. The flickering is minimal, but is absent with the direct connection I use straight from my computer to the monitor.
I know that when you first stumbled upon this, you probably said "Jesus he wrote a lot". But I had a lot to say. I want to assist in making sense of how the device operates because the information provided everywhere on the unit are vague. I even included a tutorial that may help a bit in figuring out how it works, because it truly does take patience to understand. So I sincerely hope that I save you time if you do come back to read it over =). I hope this all made sense and helps in your purchasing decision, or in figuring out how to use the device after the purchase. Take a look at the pictures I'll be uploading that reveals the rear, and side buttons of the device.
